Peony of Bánát

Peony of Banat (Paeonia banatica) is a rare flower. The ridge of Zengő Mountain in Baranya County is a major habitat of the flower in Europe. For this reason, the flower is also called the peony of Mecsek. Its roots are rhizomatous and long. It is an herbaceous plant with a single stem producing one flower. It grows 40-60 centimetres tall. The leaves are dark green and scattered on the stem in groups of three. The leaves are either elongated or elliptical with intact edges. The bottom side of the leaves is moderately hairy, making it look grey. The transition between foliage leaves, bracts, and sepals is gradual. The perianth is dichlamydeous, and the stem produces one radially symmetrical flower that is large but not rotund. Depending on weather conditions, it blossoms in May or June. the fruit it produces is called follicle.
