In the heart of the city centre, at 12 Széchenyi Square, right next to Janus Pannonius Museum Visitor Centre, Irem kertje (Irem’s Garden) has opened. The Turkish Evliya Çelebi is considered the greatest traveller in world history, having travelled the world for some 50 years and recorded what he saw. His travel writings amount to 10 volumes. He also conscientiously put his adventures in Hungary on paper, so much so that after his visit to Pécs in 1663, he wrote a very detailed description of the city, which runs to tens of pages. He called the ‘heart-stealing Pécs’ Irem’s Garden, or Garden of Paradise. Its influence is reflected in design and gastronomy. The garden features yew trees, almond trees, plane trees and dangling beech, as well as a stone gallery (officially known as a lapidarium) of stones from the Roman period.
