Greek Local Government of Pécs

The Greek Community Council of Pécs is dedicated to representing and supporting the sense of community and the preservation of identity amongst those living in Pécs who identify as Greek. In the 1950s and 1960s, 25 Greek families fleeing the Greek Civil War, which raged between 1946 and 1949, were resettled in Pécs. To this day, they keep their traditions alive, even though most of them are second- or third-generation Greeks who now consider Hungarian to be their mother tongue. The community is held together primarily by their knowledge of and love for the Greek language; its members identify as Greek and preserve Greek traditions, memories and identity.
