Pathway Picks for April

This scenic hike through the untamed landscapes of the Mecsek starts at Misina TetőPont and leads to some of the region’s most iconic lookouts, historical sites, and hidden natural wonders. The route passes through Tubes Lookouts and Lapis, continues via Remeterét, and reaches Jakab Hill, home to the Pauline Monastery ruins, Remete Cave, and Zsongor-kő Lookout. The hike ends in Kővágószőlős, from where Pécs is easily accessible.

The hike begins at Misina TetőPont, one of the most popular panoramic spots in the Mecsek. From the viewing terrace, you can enjoy breathtaking vistas of Pécs, the Zselic region, and the Eastern Mecsek. A quick refreshment at Misina Café is recommended before starting the climb along the trail toward Tubes, one of the most scenic ridge trails in the Mecsek.

At Nagy-Tubes (611 m), the János Lookout offers a stunning 360-degree panoramic view of Southern Transdanubia, with visibility reaching the Papuk Mountains in Croatia on clear days. A short detour leads to Kis-Tubes Lookout, which, despite its lower elevation, provides equally impressive views. Both sites have benches and informational signs, making them ideal for a short break.

Following the trail, the hike reaches Lapis, a former military area now home to an important meteorological station. The path then gently descends to Remeterét via the and trails, a popular resting area in the Mecsek. This forest clearing is equipped with wooden benches, rain shelters, and a freshwater spring, making it an ideal stop before continuing towards Jakab Hill.

Continuing on the trail, a steady ascent leads to Jakab Hill, where the ruins of the Pauline Monastery appear. Built in the 13th century, this monastery was once a significant spiritual center. Today, its remaining walls and tranquil forest surroundings exude a mystical atmosphere.

A short detour off the marked trail leads to Remete Cave, a man-made cave dwelling historically inhabited by Pauline monks. Further along the marked trail, the Zsongor-kő Lookout offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the Western Mecsek, overlooking the valleys below, the rolling hills of Zselic, and even the Papuk Mountains in Croatia on clear days.

From Zsongor-kő, the hike follows the marked trail along the ridge before descending via the and trails toward Kővágószőlős. Follow the marked, then trails for the final descent leads through diverse karst formations, providing a contrast to the earlier forested trails. Upon arrival in Kővágószőlős, hikers can take a break before catching public transport back to Pécs.

This route takes you through diverse landscapes, alternating between historical ruins, scenic lookout points, and wild forest trails. The 12-kilometer distance and moderate difficulty make it an excellent choice for hikers looking for a rewarding but manageable trek. The Pauline Monastery ruins and Remete Cave offer a glimpse into history, while well-maintained rest stops and freshwater sources at Remeterét and Jakab Hill ensure a comfortable hiking experience.
