Rózsakert and Shop

The recently renovated Rózsakert (Rose Garden), located near the Cathedral of Pécs, next to the Pécs Diocesan Library, was opened to the public on 20 August 2022 by László Felföldi, Bishop of Pécs.

The history of the Rózsakert area dates back to the late Roman era, but for the residents of Pécs it is more reminiscent of the popular music and dance summer restaurant Rózsakert Vendéglő, which operated in the city centre between 1954 and 2010. After the Second World War, the Diocese of Pécs leased the property and the tenant set up a wine bar in the garden building. Rózsakert Vendéglő was open until 2010, when it was renovated and reopened as an english park reminiscent of the original garden. During the renovation work, the interior of the cella trichora, or three-cell cemetery building, was revealed, revealing the history of the area dating back to Roman times. As the name of the garden suggests, the species of roses planted were chosen based on historical documentation, including woody peonies, hollyhocks, rose hips and labdanum.

Today the garden is a place of relaxation and nostalgia, which awaits its visitors through the gift shop at 10 Janus Pannonius Street during opening hours. The gift shop offers a wide range of sacred objects for all ages and genders for all occasions, be it a christening, first communion, confirmation or wedding. Many of these objects are related to our saints, who can be found on the frescoes and windows of the Cathedral or the Mosque, but you can also find the much-loved and sought-after Saint Christopher, the patron saint of travellers. The main motifs of our products are the images of the Pécs Bishopric and the Christograms. The design of the Corpus Christi Chapel of the Pécs Cathedral, the emblem of the Pécs Bishopric, is a decorative painting designed by Gustav Bamberger, a master of Viennese academic painting. But of course you can also buy more than just sacred objects, such as unique handcrafted souvenirs, business gifts, gastronomic accessories, books and publications, and souvenirs for children. Our selection includes, among other things, the Címeres wines of the Pécs Bishopric, which are selected from the best wines of the Villány, Pécs, Szekszárd and Tolna wine regions.
