Saint Vincent's Day wine experiences

“Bright Vincent, full cellar, foggy Vincent, empty cellar” – so the saying goes.

22 January, St. Vincent’s Day, is a day of great importance in the life of winemakers, because “if the sun shines on St. Vincent, the cellar will be full of wine”, meaning that if the sun shines on this day, we can expect a good quality, abundant harvest.

A tradition linked to St. Vincent originated in the Drávaszög region near the Villány wine region, where the pruned vince stalks told the story of the new harvest: the stalks were placed in a glass jar in a warm place, and it was believed that if many buds sprouted, a good harvest would be expected. Winegrowers also believed that drinking plenty of wine would help the harvest, so wine glasses were often brought out to celebrate the festival.

We’ve gathered together the most exciting wine events to celebrate the meeting of wine and tradition. The varied events also offer the chance to learn about local history, take a professional course or even experience the wine in the form of a theatre performance.
