Land transport

The primary access road to Pécs in the region is main road 6, and the fastest road to Pécs for traffic through and from Budapest is motorway M6/60. International visitors arriving at Liszt Ferenc Airport in Budapest can get to Pécs using the motorway in a little more than 2 hours. Freight transport is also possible by inland waterways due to the proximity of the port in Mohács.

Motorway M6/M60

Pécs is directly connected to Budapest by motorway M6/M60; therefore, Budapest can be reached by car using this motorway in 2 hours and 15 minutes where the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) can be accessed. The motorway provides access to Mohács, Szekszárd, Paks, and Dunaújváros, and Székesfehérvár can also be accessed quickly taking a little detour.

 

Main road 6

Main road 6 goes through Pécs towards Budapest in the North providing an alternative to motorway M6/M60 and towards Szigetvár and Barcs in the West.

Main roads 66/67

These roads provide access to Pécs from Kaposvár and Lake Balaton. From Balatonlelle, main road 67 goes through Kaposvár and Szigetvár and joins main road 6 leading to Pécs. Main road 66 directly connects Pécs and Kaposvár.

Main road 57

The road connecting Pécs and Mohács is frequently used to transport the cargo shipped to Mohács on River Danube. Motorway M6/M60 can be accessed from main road 57.

Border crossing points

In the proximity of Pécs on the Southern border, there are three important border crossing points to Croatia:

  • using main road 6 to the West – in Barcs
  • using main road 58 to the South – in Drávaszabolcs
  • using main road 57 to Mohács, then turning South to main road 56 towards Udvar

Railway

Pécs and Budapest are connected by InterCity passenger trains. Domestic and international rail freight transport is possible, and ‘truck on train’ infrastructure may as well be available.
