Pécs Opera

Pécs Opera was established in 1960 in Pécs. Its expanded choir was made up in 1984 of theatre singers and musically educated opera enthusiast amateurs with the aim of developing their talent, promoting the genre, supporting the music education of children, and especially bringing Hungarian operas to domestic and international audiences. The choir has regularly performed across the country for aesthetic and educational purposes. The ensemble is the resident choir of the Pécs Opera. Their repertoire ranges from oratorios to operas. The choir has performed on Opera Tours and concert multiple times in Germany, in former Yugoslavia, the United Kingdom, and accepted the invitation of the American Blue Lake Arts Camp youth music institution in the United States. They sang six performances of Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute and toured Chicago, Port Austin, Muskegon, Grand Rapids, Clio and Toledo with a special programme consisting of Hungarian opera excerpts. Later they were also asked by contemporary composers to perform the premieres of their oratorical pieces, while they constantly worked in the theatre as well. Last time in the summer of 2006, the ensemble performed the 45-person choir part of Ferenc Erkel’s opera titled Hunyadi László at the Bakáts tér Festival in Budapest organized by Fenyár. In 2007, the opera company staged Mozart’s Il Seraglio with the participation of the choir.
