University of Pécs
Pécs prides itself on having the first Hungarian university, the University of Pécs (Pécsi Tudományegyetem: PTE) in the city. The university being the largest university in Southern Transdanubia is also the largest employer in the city. It offers a wide range of degree courses at all levels, playing an important role in every field of culture, science, art, and medicine in the region. It is one of the largest universities in Hungary with 10 faculties and approximately 20,000 students.
The university of Pécs is a highly popular university among international students due to its safe environment, high quality education, reasonable tuition fees, low cost of living, and its large international community. In 2020, about 5000 international students from 114 different countries were enrolled in over 80 foreign language programmes. In 2021, the University of Pécs was ranked 155 in the Times Higher Education Emerging Economies University Rankings among hundreds of universities from fifty countries around the world.
János Szentágothai Research Centre
János Szentágothai Research Centre (Szentágothai János Kutatóközpont: SZKK) of the University of Pécs is a recently established research institute following modern international science organisational and management norms. It aims to further all aspects of education, research, and innovation in the fields of biomedical, natural, and environmental sciences. It brings together the infrastructural and research potential of the Southern Transdanubia Region, closely collaborates with academic and industrial partners in complex ways and responds flexibly to research trends, and the needs of knowledge-based economy. The state-of-the-art infrastructure, instruments, and expertise of the 24 research groups housed in the building can make the centre a well-known and leading research facility in Hungary and in Central-Europe too.
